Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Psalm 1:1,2

Last week we noted that the blessed man has to say “Yes” and “No” appropriately. He is to resist his sinful inclinations and grow in his joy and delight of the things of God. We might think it a strange expression to delight in the law of the Lord. Doesn’t “law” sound gloomy?

God’s law does many things. First, it reveals God’s holy character. God’s law shows that He is not like one of us. His righteousness is above us, it is perfect. In His law, we see that God, unlike human beings, is the perfect Judge. But, all of this could depress us, seeing that we are imperfect, unholy and unrighteous. But, God’s law doesn’t stop there! It reveals that the God against whom we sin has provided a sufficient remedy: a pure, sinless sacrifice that removes the guilt of sin, and makes sinners righteous in His sight. The law points us to Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). The God who is the holy Judge is also full of grace, mercy and compassion.

Next, the law reveals God’s will for how we are to live in order to bring glory to Him. His will doesn’t confine us to a life of boring rule-keeping, but teaches us to how to live in true freedom. It may be demanding at times, but it is always from a loving Father for the good of His children.

Delight and meditate in God’s law. You will see the glory of God’s character. You will see His work of redeeming sinners. You will learn what it means to honor and glorify Him with your life. This is what it means to be blessed!
