“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” Psalm 34:18
God would be justified to stay as far away from sinners as possible. He would be justified never to offer one hint of hope or mercy for those who have rebelled against Him. Yet, this holy and pure God has come very close to sinners in the person of Christ. This amazing condescension should give hope to sinners today.
Some people grieve over their sins and despair thinking, “How will I ever be close to God with all my failings?” But, it is to those who do grieve over their sins that God gives this encouraging word. There are others who see their sins, but have no contrition at all. Excuses, self-justification and blame towards others may be their way of coping. God gives no word of encouragement to this kind of attitude.
How do you respond to your sins? Are you quick to make excuses or do you fully admit your failings to God and take personal responsibility? When a heart is truly contrite over sin, it is ready to receive and lay hold of God’s forgiving grace. The heart that is hard has no room for grace because it does not admit its need for it. Ask God for a contrite heart towards sin and rejoice fully that He saves and comes near contrite sinners!
