Sunday

Simple New Testament worship. Families together. The Word opened. A meal after.

We come together at 10:30 a.m. Our services keep the simplicity of New Testament worship. First there is about thirty minutes of congregational singing—several songs from the psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, making melody in our hearts to the Lord—together with prayer and Scripture read aloud, to prepare our hearts for worship. Then about an hour is given to the preached Word. A hymn that gathers up the sermon follows, so the church can reflect on what we’ve learned from God’s Word. After that come prayer requests and announcements. The morning service is ordinarily finished by noon. Every Sunday we eat together afterward.

If you are new

Come With a Settled Heart

Visiting a church can feel unfamiliar. We want you to know what to expect so you can come and worship without wondering what happens next.

No pressure. There is no altar call and no expectation that a visitor stand, speak, or give.

Children in the service. We have no separate children’s church. A parent may step out with a little one if needed and return when ready.

The Lord’s Supper. When the church observes the Supper, it is given to baptized members. Visitors are welcome to remain and observe.

If This Is Your First Sunday

Most Lord’s Days you will find no more than fifty to sixty people. That is not a crowd you disappear into. You will be greeted. Come as you are able. Sit. Sing what you can. Stay for the meal if you can.

  • Dress runs from Sunday best to business-casual.
  • Children remain with their parents during the service.
  • The meal after worship is how we become a people to strangers.
  • Bring a Bible if you have one; we can put one in your hand if you do not.

We love the Doctrines of Grace, having great appreciation for historic Baptist Confessions like the London 1646, 1689 and the Philadelphia 1742. Above all, we want Christ to have the preeminence in all we do.

How We Worship

“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” — Matthew 18:20

Worship at Collierville Primitive Baptist Church is ordered by this conviction: God has told us in His Word how He is to be worshipped. We do not add to Scripture, and we do not take from it. So our worship is simple, reverent, and shaped by the New Testament pattern that has marked Primitive Baptist churches for generations.

It is not enough to worship sincerely; we must worship according to the Word of God.

Prayer

“Pray without ceasing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Public prayer is offered at different times throughout the service. Though one man leads in offering the prayer, the whole church is to be joined together with him as we give thanks, confess sin, acknowledge our need and hope in the Lord.

Congregational Singing

“Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” — Ephesians 5:19

We sing together without musical instruments. The gathered voice of the church is the instrument we believe God has given for praise. The hymns are doctrinally rich, drawn from the treasury of Baptist hymnody, and meant to be sung by the whole body — not performed for it. One heart and one voice, singing with grace in our hearts.

We worship as families. Children remain with their parents, to participate and to hear from the same God as the adults.

The Reading and Preaching of the Word

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” — 2 Timothy 4:2

Scripture is read aloud. The sermon is the center of the service. The pastor opens a passage — often working through a book of the Bible — and applies it to the people. Preaching seeks to expose the meaning of the text as it reveals God’s glory and His will for us. When the Word is faithfully preached, God addresses His church.

The sermon is ordinarily about an hour. All preaching is driven by the Gospel of Grace: God saving sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Afterward, our pastor is available to meet with visitors — questions about Christ, about this congregation, or a request for prayer.

The Lord’s Supper

“For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.” — 1 Corinthians 11:26

We observe the Lord’s Supper as a memorial of Christ’s death and a proclamation of His return. The bread and the cup are received by baptized members of the church.

Life Together

We enjoy developing fellowship and encouragement with one another through various events throughout the year, including monthly studies for men and women, prayer meetings, and various fellowship events.
