“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1

The other gospels begin with events surrounding the birth of Jesus or the beginning of His earthly ministry. John’s gospel begins before that. This man we call Jesus is also God. While His human existence had a beginning, in His deity, God the Son has always been. John says, “In the beginning…He already existed!”

Before the powerful, ancient Babylonian empire, or Alexander the Great, or Ghengis Khan, or Napoleon, or the British empire, or the United States, or ISIS…God the Son was! The implications of this are awe-inspiring.

One, His existence doesn’t depend upon a higher power for sustaining. He exists and is sustained by His own self. Two, no matter how great and passionate the opposition, Jesus will never be dethroned and His kingdom will never fail. Three, since He is eternal, His promises to those who believe in Him will always hold true. Not only His promises, but every aspect of His word will stand firm.

What does this mean to you today? Are you worshipping the One who always has been and always will be? Do you have consolation and encouragement even while living in a world filled with evil and confusion? Are you believing, trusting, obeying and resting in His unshakable word?
