“Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of Him that sent me, and to finish His work.” John 4:34

We gain insight here into the passion and heart of the man Jesus Christ while He was here on earth. He didn’t come on a political crusade, as if He were trying to win an election. He didn’t come like some “preachers” today with a message of, “All of you are okay, the most important thing is for you to feel good about yourselves” in order to gain a big following.

His meat or food, that is His passion and delight and motivation and refreshment, was to accomplish the Father’s will in executing the work He had been given. These words are from the mouth of Jesus Himself! We have his first-hand testimony that this is what His life on earth was all about. And, He fulfilled His passion. He did accomplish His Father’s will. This means He lived the perfect, obedient life that every other human being has failed miserably to live. He did what every other human being has not done, which is to perfectly love the Father. Furthermore, He personally bore the penalty of sin for all those the Father gave Him. His mission was to seek and save…and He did it! He gained eternal life for those who earned nothing but eternal death by their own efforts. Jesus is the great success story!

How about you? What is your heart and passion, your meat? Where do you seek fulfillment and what dominates your thoughts? Is the “God-part” of your life mere church attendance or does it go much deeper? If we love Jesus, let us follow His example. May our deepest desire be to do the will of our Father. What is that will? That we worship God, find our deep joy in Him, treasure and value Him above every other pursuit and to obey His word.
