Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me.” Isaiah 46:9

God has to remind His people frequently of basic, yet profound truths. Human beings are creatures prone to idolatry, placing great confidence in something other than the true and living God. We trust in our own abilities, wisdom or accomplishements. We trust in wealth, the promise of a life of pleasure, or powerful individuals. But, at some point all these things have great limitations and will ultimately fail.

Here, God steps in and speaks clearly that He alone is worthy to be worshipped and He alone is worthy of full confidence. He is eternal, unchanging, all-powerful, just and good, abundant in mercy, grace and love, and possesses perfect wisdom. He is supreme above every other being and always accomplishes all His purposes. He is the only one able to forgive sin and to make a sinner righteous. He has a personal relationship with each of His beloved children. It is Him and Him alone, and no one else!

Think seriously and honestly for a moment. Ask yourself where your confidence is. Are you willing to have only 60, 70 or 80 percent confidence in God? Do you trust fully in Christ’s finished work to make you righteous before God? Do you trust His wisdom for how to live life and to carry you through difficult seasons? Ask yourself what you worship. Is God most precious to you? Is knowing and walking with Jesus what makes you most happy? Do you fit God around your life, or fit your life around God?

May you and I take to heart this powerful reminder today. He is God, and there is none else. He is God, and there is none like Him!
