“…that ye being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height, and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” Ephesians 3:18-19

It feels insufficient to even comment on these precious words…because it is! But, we’ll try. First, let us note that the love of Christ is real. It is not a fairy-tale movie or a philosophical theory. It is a reality. It was real when the Son of God agreed before the foundation of the world to assume human nature. It was real when Jesus forgave a promiscuous woman and even when He rebuked His foolish disciples. It was real when He silently took the shame spitting of His detractors, and ultimately the wrath of God for sinners on the Cross. It is a reality that should daily lead us as believers to trust, rest, obedience and worship. Take time and ponder the reality of it.

Next, we note that you can’t fully fathom it. None of us will ever totally “figure it out.” Paul here prays that the saints of God be able to see how high and wide and deep and long is Jesus’ love. It is a love that passes knowledge! It is deeper than the depths of our polluted sins. It will take us to the heights of glory. It is so wide it embraces people of all kinds of colors, cultures and backgrounds and unites them around the Cross of Christ. It is as long as eternity!

Believer, the love of Christ is not cheap. It is not fickle, and it is not weak. It is faithful, strong and has a purifying effect upon the soul. You and I should never cease praying and seeking to know more of the depths of it, that we might be filled with all the fulness of God.
